Miniature Ion Guide/Funnel Driver Electronics

After the founder of SpecialtyCircuits LLC quit his job in a mass spectrometer company and went to do software engineering, he did not think he was done with mass spectrometer yet. So he spent some time in the evenings before his daughter's birth designing a new set of RF electronics for ion guides with simplification and cost-reduction as the primary goal. 

Once his daughter was born, this new life priority took charge and the progress of ion guide driver stalled. Now that the daughter has grown big enough, he is now able to restart this project. 

Highlights: 

• Solution size is about two soda cans.
• Two ion guide/ion funnel driver at 2MHz, up to 700Vpp output.
• Seven high voltage output covers a 200Vpp output range for high impedance load such as electrostatic lens, deflectors. 
• High voltage outputs' common voltage can be programmatically shifted to accommodate both positive and negative ion modes without doubling the total output swing of all output driver. 
• Only require one 24V power input. The driver generate all required high and low voltages by itself. 
• All controls are done via DAC, not potentiometers. 
• All controls are done digitally, no external analog signal needed.
• RF power amplifier supports both open-loop and analog closed-loop output level control.
• Provides LabVIEW source code to drive the full electronics
• Digital communication is via SPI bus. 
• Hard connection to the ion guide via specially designed PCB-based vacuum feedthrough, no cables.
